How to run this drill

Defensive Drills for Football – The W Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

This is one of my favorite [tag]defensive drills for football[/tag]. It is called the “W” drill and I use it when working with my [tag]defensive backs[/tag] and receivers.

Set 5 cones out in a “W” formation 5 yards apart ( top of the W to the bottom ).   Start each player backwards at the first cone and he backpedals on a 45 degree angle to the next cone, then plants and comes back to the next cone on a 45 degree angle.   Repeat and run through the last cone.

Coaching Points:
Ӣ Quick feet in the backpedal
Ӣ Stay low and plant to react to play
Ӣ Pump arms to produce quick leg action.
”¢ Eyes face forward to read play.   ( Introduce random [tag]football[/tag] throws at the players during this [tag]football drill[/tag] to make sure they are watching the ball, not their feet.)

It is incredible to see how quickly the players get good at this football drill and how their agility increases everytime we do this drill.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
