How to run this drill

Defensive Back Football Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Bill”¦
I’m going to give you a [tag]football drill[/tag] that has worked well for us. This is a [tag]defensive line football drill[/tag] for getting a good pass rush.

I take a football and paint it green. I then attach it to some fishing line and a small pole. I hold the pole and move the ball on different snap counts. I have my defensive line line up and on the slightest movement they get up field. The point of this is they really have to concentrate on the ball.

This works very well at getting them to concentrate on the ball. It is a very simple drill that works really well. This helped us to two division titles and a state title over the last two seasons. We also had 4 all-division linemen and 1 all-state lineman this past season. I hope this helps some of you other [tag]football coach[/tag]es.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
