How to run this drill

Youth Flag Football – Blocking Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

I recently coached a [tag]youth flag football[/tag] team   for the first time!   The kids were 5 and 6 year olds and quite a challenge!   In our league, blocking is done by just guarding, as in basketball.   The kids weren’t really getting it.

What I did was line them all up on the offensive line and they were all told to stay in and block.   I had a center, a QB, and a running back behind him.

The assistant [tag]football coach[/tag] and I were the defense.   They hiked the [tag]football[/tag] and the kids did a great job at keeping the assistant coach and me from the running back.

They learned to block and had fun stopping us,   (a bigger defense than they would ever see in the game). Worked like a charm.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
