How to run this drill

Running Back Football Drills – Sideline Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.

These ideas for [tag]running back football drills[/tag] are ones that I find most effective.   Your running backs gain agility and learn how to run the sidelines and stay in bounds.

If your [tag]football field[/tag] is marked, head over about 10 yards out from one of the sidelines (if your practice field isn’t lined, you can space out some cones 5 yards apart to simulate a sideline).

Take 3 kids with hand shields and put them 5 yards away from the sideline and 5 yards apart from each other.

Take your running back and either:
A.) hand the [tag]football[/tag] off or
B.) run a little toss to him, so the direction he is heading in is the area between the sideline and your players with hand shields.

As he runs through these two obstacles, the players with hand shields give him a real good shot trying to knock your running back out of bounds.Running Back Football Drills

Your RB should be DELIVERING the blow to the defender, not absorbing it during this [tag]football drill[/tag]. All the meanwhile, he is trying to keep his feet moving on contact and staying in bounds.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
