Many coaches struggle to come up with new ideas for [tag]football lineman drills[/tag]. Here is one suggestion that was sent in recently. It works well especially with younger players.
We use a [tag]football drill[/tag] that we call our “Tuff Man” blocking drill that benefits both offensive and defensive line men along with running backs that are constantly involved in blocking. 
Here is how it works:
Between cones set about 6 ft or so apart we have an offensive and defensive lineman line up on the line of scrimmage. In the back field about 5 yards or so deep we have our blocking back (usually the full backs but we also use others) set up in his stance.
The object here is for the defensive lineman to fight thru the offensive lineman and then the blocking back. If he gets thru both then at the end is either a tackling dummy or another [tag]football coach[/tag] flips a second ball on the ground for fumble recovery.
We do a series of elimination by using stop watches to time how long it takes for the defensive man to get through each block. By the end of the exercise we will have the “Toughest” defensive lineman, offensive lineman and running back going head to head. Those three then become the captains for the following [tag]football[/tag] practice/game.
It really gets the kids fired up and it is surprising to see how often the “Tuff Man” title changes hands. Our blocking has seen significant strides on both the line and in the backfield.
